The Barbara Roberts CTEC project received $500,000 from a Workforce Ready Grant for Manufacturing. This will allow students in the manufacturing pathway to explore careers in manufacturing and have the opportunity for earn-and-learn training opportunities. This grant will help train students in a wide range of skills that they can use all across Oregon’s diverse manufacturing sector.

Dear Chairman Cole and Ranking Member DeLauro, I am requesting funding for the Sheridan School District’s Barbara Roberts Career and Technical Education Center in fiscal year 2025. The entity to receive funding for this project is Sheridan School District. The project is located at 435 South Bridge Street, Sheridan, OR 97378. Funds will be used to provide direct training to students and adults, either re-entering the workforce or retraining, in four primary areas: truck driving and diesel mechanics, fire fighting and emergency services, agricultural industries, and general manufacturing. The project is an appropriate use of taxpayer funds because it will provide career pathways to students and adults in need of retraining in a community with a significant low-income population. The project has a Federal nexus because the funding provided is for purposes authorized in 42 U.S.C.5305(a)(1), 5305(a)(2), and 5305(a)(4). I certify that I have no financial interest in this project, and neither does anyone in my immediate family.
Sincerely, Andrea Salinas Member of Congress

Hampton Lumber Announces $1,000,000 Donation to Barbara Roberts CTE Center
New Facility Would Greatly Expand Career and Technical Education Opportunities for Rural Students
March 18, 2024: Portland, OR – Hampton Lumber is pleased to announce a $1 million donation to the Sheridan School District to assist in development of the Barbara Roberts Career Technical (CTE) Center in Sheridan, OR.
The planned 24,000 square-foot facility will offer hands-on training opportunities to high school students in Sheridan and the surrounding school districts. There is great disparity in CTE opportunities across Oregon and rural schools are underserved despite growing demand for such programming. This collaborative, regional CTE program will help local students build important skills and connect to well-paying jobs in and around their communities.
The center will support training in Fire Science, Diesel Tech and Truck Driving, Manufacturing Technology and Agribusiness. Hampton’s contribution will allow Sheridan School District to finish construction of the fire tower and commence demolition of the existing structure to make way for construction.
Sheridan School District is planning to develop the center in a phased approach, starting with programs for Firefighting/EMT Training and Diesel Tech with Truck Driving. All CTE programs will include instruction on post-secondary opportunities through community colleges, universities, trade schools and apprenticeships. Students will be able to earn some college credits while in high school, and then complete the industry certification requirements at the college level.
